As guests arrived, they were greeted by a banner announcing the baby’s name. I also made a pink tulle wreath (which can later be hung over Clara’s crib as a mobile) and attached paper flowers that matched those used on the invitations.

As gifts were opened, we sampled several different flavors of hot tea and nibbled on scones, tea cookies, chicken salad sandwiches, fruit kebabs, and – Christian’s favorite – cupcakes! The cupcakes and sandwiches were topped with little flags that had messages like “A Sweet Baby Girl is Brewing” and “Tea for Two”. Pink and yellow tulips were arranged in tea tins and pieces to a silver tea set that belonged to Christian as a child.

It was a gorgeous Saturday in Austin, Texas, and I felt so blessed to be there celebrating my dear friend and the sweet baby girl that is brewing!

As you can see, I had a little too much fun designing our Christmas postcard this year. I thought it would be festive to Photoshop reindeer antlers on the dogs and give Oliver a bright red Rudolph nose. Apparently Ollie was not a fan, though! The cards were all stacked up neatly ready to be mailed when I discovered that he snatched a few off the table and shredded them into a million tiny pieces. So if you didn’t get a card from us this year, it’s because our dog ate it!

is just now beginning to wear out after 6.5 years of daily use.

I can’t even begin to convey how much I love these two girls; they are among God’s greatest blessings in my life. We are all different, yet our personalities complement each other so well that is clear we were destined to be friends. Lifelong friends. Everyone should be so lucky as to have besties like Bethany and Christian!

So, girls – where should we travel next year? I’m already missing you both!

Apparently not much has changed over the years. My family frequently reminds me of the Thanksgiving when I was about 7 or 8 and bellied up to the table with nothing but apple pie, whipped cream, and potato chips on my dinner plate. While it seemed like a perfectly acceptable meal to me, my mom was certain that the pilgrims were rolling over in their graves!

This week I’ve been planning the menu for our Thanksgiving feast and briefly considered serving only potato chips and dessert. (Afterall, nothing says “God Bless America” quite like a cornucopia full of fried spuds.) But when I asked my family for special Thanksgiving requests, potato chips were nowhere on the list. Cue the sad pilgrim face.

Instead, this year our Thanksgiving menu will include:

• Smoked Turkey & Gravy
• Italian Sausage Dressing
• Cranberry Chutney
• Maple-Pecan Sweet Potatoes
• Garlicky Green Beans with Pine Nuts
• Butternut Squash Soup
• Parmesan Knots
• Pecan Pie
• Apple-Buttermilk Custard Pie

I really enjoy cooking as long as I can do it at a leisurely pace with a glass of wine in hand, but tend to get a little frantic when the frenzy of last-minute preparations hits right before the meal goes on the table. An Iron Chef I am not!

In an attempt to alleviate some of that stress (and because I’m slightly neurotic), I put together this “Gobble Guide” to map out which recipes I can prepare in advance and schedule the time each dish needs to go into the oven on Thanksgiving Day. Hopefully it will keep me on track in the kitchen and perhaps even save the rolls from burning!

I appreciate all the calls and messages we received from friends and family checking on us after this crazy weekend of earthquakes in Oklahoma. We’re totally fine! What a bizarre feeling, though, to be jolted awake from a deep sleep by the sound of your house vibrating all around you. Not the most pleasant alarm clock, that’s for sure! I am thankful earthquakes are a rare event around here!

While we’re on the subject of feeling thankful, I want to share a simple project that Jason and I recently started to document our many blessings. All too often we spend our time and energy focusing on the things we don’t have, the people who bring us down, our failures and frustrations, etc, etc, etc. As the holiday season approaches, I wanted a tangible way to remind us of all that is good and right with the world. While on a hike the other day it hit me – gratitude stones!

Our plan is that every day from November 1 until Thanksgiving we will each write at least one thing that we are thankful for on a stone (don’t worry, you KNOW I scrubbed the dirt off!) and collect them in a glass vase. When Thanksgiving Day rolls around, the vase will be full of happy reminders of God’s love and goodness.

“Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
Worship the LORD with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the LORD is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.

This year, however, he couldn’t handle the pressure of such fierce competition and took a nap on the couch while I went to town carving my “G”. (In case you’re wondering, it stands for “gangsta”.) And then, because he was still asleep, I decorated his pumpkin as well, using his favorite drill to perforate hundreds of tiny holes in its flesh (which seemed like a good idea at the time….but not so much when I was cleaning pumpkin guts off the drill before sneaking it back to the garage).

This is another one of my winning creations from a couple years ago. It’s a silhouette of our sweet labrador retriever, Denver. (Ollie had not yet emerged from his hole in the ground to join our pack, which is why he is not represented with a gourd here.)

These are the pumpkins we carved together on our first Halloween as Mr. and Mrs. G. As you can see, Finchley closely inspected our work and declared the winner! I’ll leave it to you to guess who carved which one.

Here are some helpful tips I learned for keeping your gourds looking good until Halloween:

1. Rub petroleum jelly on the exposed flesh of your pumpkin to slow decay.
2. Place packets of silica crystals inside the pumpkin to soak up moisture and prevent mold growth.
3. Wrap a strand of Christmas lights around a glass for a radiant light source (remember to cut a hole in the back of the pumpkin for the cord).
